Who we are
The Roborant Review was started by Hugh Leeman and Matt Gonzalez in mid-June of this year to offer a diversity of sources in contemporary long-form art writing. We join a number of publications based in Northern California in the hopes of further enhancing what we believe to be an already vibrant art scene.
Hugh Leeman is our managing editor and oversees all aspects of the publication. He lectures on art at universities and museums across the United States on the power of art to influence beliefs and the future of images' ability to re-engineer contemporary social constructs.
Kelly Jean Egan is one of our primary writers and serves as our senior editor. She works in a variety of roles, including editing contributions, managing our social media account, and helping to select exhibitions to be reviewed. She has worked as a professional writer across various fields, including finance, marketing, visual arts, and film.
Matt Gonzalez is an editor-at-large who assists in all aspects of the publication. He has written extensively on art and politics and has curated numerous exhibitions in the Bay Area.
Although based in San Francisco, we highlight writing from around the art world.
We offer five primary features: 1) original art reviews of current, or recently completed, art exhibitions by both experienced and new writers, without any geographic constraint, 2) interviews with artists and curators that we believe are compelling and noteworthy, 3) excerpts from upcoming art-related book publications we find informative and didactic, 4) an art review aggregator that features a collection of art related writing from around the world, and which are easily accessible from a single page, in the hopes of fostering more readership of a wide array of art journals, and 5) “artist on artist” engagements where we invite well-known artists to write reviews in their own voice capturing their thoughts on other artist’s work; although not overly formal, we believe these reviews offer insights worth sharing.
The Roborant Review is not devoted to any single style of art or medium; rather, our objective is to engage with a multitude of art programs and help viewers better understand what can often be challenging terrain. Importantly, we are not in competition with any other journal but rather seek to build a stronger and dynamic art ecosystem. Simply put, we hope to draw more attention to exhibitions that we believe deserve greater notoriety. To that end, we encourage our readers to also visit Juxtapoz Magazine, Art Bae, and Squarecylinder, each based in San Francisco, which offer additional critical attention to many exhibitions worth connecting with.
We invite cultural organizations and art lovers to engage, subscribe, and help shape the future of this publication. We welcome feedback and suggestions that might further our goals and make our contribution to the art community more impactful.
